Twirl hat

This is my take on a classic hat construction.  The Twirl hat makes use of both colours in the brioche pattern to really emphasize the twirling stripe.  This pattern makes the most out of a few stitches; it’s an ideal pattern for a first venture into brioche, or for adapting the pattern to your own needs.

A glass head sits on a table in front of a dark hedge. It is wearing a yellow striped brioche hat with brown brim, and a brown stripes moves diagonally across the hat.
A rainbow coloured hat is placed flat on variegated leaves. It has black stripes running diagonally from the bottom to the top.

This pattern is available on Ravelry, Payhip and Lovecrafts. There is a low vision accessible version of this pattern.

Additional Notes

This hat is worked from the bottom-up in the round. The pattern is available in 8 sizes (preemie to large adult) and can be customised for fit from beanie to slouchy. In order for the hat to fit snugly there is negative ease built into the pattern. This means that the finished size is smaller than the size of head it will fit. Please take this into account when choosing which size to knit.

Any DK weight yarn should work well with this pattern. Choose two strongly contrasting colours for the best effect.

Make it your own

This is my interpretation of a classic pattern. Its straightforward nature means you can adapt this pattern to any weight yarn you would like. There are a few things to remember: brioche knitting creates a lovely deep, squishy, warm fabric; but because the stitches are thick, they cannot also be tall. This means that the suggested tension on the ball band will not match the tension of the brioche fabric. In general, brioche stitches tend to be wider and shorter than standard stocking stitch. If you do choose to work this in a different weight yarn, I strongly recommend swatching first and working out how many stitches and rows you have to 10cm / 4 inches.
