Technical Editing

I offer technical editing for knitting patterns.  As an independent designer myself, I know how long the process is to bring the idea from your head into an actual knitted object.  It often results in heartache and ripping back when something is not quite right.  No designer wants to pass those experiences on to knitters; we want to share the joy of crafting and creating something truly unique to you.

In order to do that, the pattern needs to be clear, easy to follow and professional.  That is where a tech editor comes in.  During the tech editing process, the pattern will be checked for clarity and accuracy.  It is not possible to fully check your own work because we read what we think we have said, not what is actually there.   Tech editing can pick up issues before the pattern reaches your test knitters or customers.

My approach and qualifications

I view tech editing as a collaboration with the designer – always acknowledging that the designer retains control of their pattern.  I like to build a relationship with my clients, so that I can tailor my services exactly to your needs.  I adapt my role to match the designers requirements; I offer more support for a new designer, right through to a quick read through for more established designers. I have been knitting for 30 years and have released my own patterns over the last few years; feel free to browse my designs.  Alternatively, you can find testimonials and selected patterns I have edited here.   I have completed the technical editing course provided by Joeli of The Tech Editor Hub.  A perfectionist by inclination, I am also trained to pay attention to detail as I hold a PhD in clinical linguistics (language disorders).   I have a deep appreciation for how language works.  I know grammar inside out and backwards – not only what “proper” usage is, but also when rules can be broken for stylistic reasons.  This knowledge gives me a strong foundation for supporting non-native speakers.  Spreadsheets hold no fear for me due to the many statistical analyses I have performed for my research. In addition to tech editing, I can provide schematics, charts, grading and accessibility advice, stylesheets and templates.  Please browse through the services I offer for more information.

How it all works

The process would start with me providing an estimate of cost, based on a read through of your pattern and your requirements.  I charge an hourly rate of £24 (GB sterling)/ $32 (USD) based on every 15 minutes of work.  Though the amount of time taken for each pattern may vary depending on the work required, in general the following is a guide:

  • small accessories, simple or one sized:                                                                                    0.5-1 hour
  • more complex, multi-sized accessories, charts, unusual construction, or simple garments:    1-2 hours
  • more complex garments:                                                                                                           3+ hours.

If I start working with the pattern and the initial quote appears inaccurate, I will not exceed the agreed price without consultation.  I am happy to work with word docs or pdfs and will return the file to you with suggested changes or queries.  It is important to note that throughout this process the pattern remains your work; you should feel free to accept or ignore any suggestions that I may make.  It is also a two-way process; you may find that you wish to make changes in addition to those I suggest (and I welcome this!). The quote includes a free final read through after all the changes have been agreed between us.

Please feel free to contact me, especially if you have any questions that haven’t been answered here.
